6 Tips for a Hassle-Free Hike in the Forest

There seem to be terrifying news stories of people becoming lost in the forest every day.

Sadly, reporters frequently highlight the dramatic aspects of stories rather than suggesting techniques to avoid being lost in the first place. Don't let their experience discourage you from spending time outside, especially in one of our national forests.

You can keep your adventures safe and awesome by following these easy tips:

6 Tips for a Hassle-Free Hike in the Forest

Navigation

Carry a GPS and be familiar with its use. You may frequently utilize your phone and GPS apps even with no cell service. Always have a map and compass if your phone or GPS equipment breaks down. Learn how to use them to navigate the country and find your location. Practice in secure environments, like a park, and under more difficult circumstances, like a whiteout, snowfall, or rain.

First-aid.

Always have a first aid kit on hand. Enroll in a wilderness first-aid course for even better preparation.

Food.

Bring additional food!  In the woods, you'll burn a lot of calories. This could be jerky or a few freeze-dried meals that are light and long-lasting.

Fire and cover.

Bring a tent for dire situations.   Include a basic fire-starting kit in your first aid supply. Just fuel and a sparker are necessary. Practice lighting fires in areas that are both legal and safe.

Emergency gear.

Always keep a small folding knife and headlamp with you. There are a lot of powerful headlamps that weigh just an ounce or less and a lot of very light blades. Add some purifying tabs for your bottled water.

For extra "insurance," purchase a SPOT or equivalent emergency satellite beacon. Prepare a stuff sack with your emergency supplies so they are ready for when you are. Never forget backup batteries!

Keep Calm.

A person's ability to remain cool and optimistic is frequently the key to survival during an unplanned disaster.

When going on a day trek, it can be simple to forget to pack these items, but that is no excuse. Just as frequently as larger journeys, day trips might end up being emergencies. Bring them whenever you go out, as they are all lightweight and won't take up much space in your pack.
